Text: John 20:1–18

Aim:

To help believers understand the connection between the resurrection of Jesus and our justification by faith, and how His resurrection empowers our spiritual life, hope, and victory.

Introduction:

The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. it is the proof of His divinity and the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan. Through His resurrection, we are justified, and we gain new life. The empty tomb is not just a historical fact; it has personal and spiritual implications for every believer (Romans 4:25, 1 Corinthians 15:17). Jesus’ resurrection demonstrated his victory over death (Acts 2:24; 1 Cor. 15:54-57), vindicated him as righteous (John 16:10), and indicated his divine identity (Rom. 1:4). It led on to his ascension and enthronement (Acts 1:9-11; 2:34; Phil. 2:9-11; Isa. 53:10-12) and his present heavenly reign. It guarantees the believer’s present forgiveness and justification (Rom. 4:25; 1 Cor. 15:17) and is the basis of resurrection life in Christ for the believer here and now (John 11:25-26; Rom. 6; Eph. 1:18–2:10; Col. 2:9-15; 3:1-4).

Study Questions:

  1. What do we learn from Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the risen Christ in John 20:1–18?
  2. What does resurrection have to do with our justification? (Romans 4:25; Acts 13:38-39)
  3. How does the resurrection give believers power for daily living? (Romans 6:4-5; Philippians 3:10)
  4. How should the power of resurrection shape our faith, hope, and conduct? (Colossians 3:1-4; 1 Peter 1:3-5)
  5. How can we live in the reality of resurrection, not just celebrate it once a year? (Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 2:4-6)

Food for Thought:

If Christ’s resurrection secured our justification and new life, are we living as people who are truly free, forgiven, and empowered?

Conclusion:

Resurrection is not just a past event; it is a present power. Through it, we are justified, made alive in Christ, and given a living hope. Let us respond in worship, obedience, and confidence in our victorious Saviour.

Memory Verse:

Romans 4:25 – “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.”
